SOMATIC EXPERIENCING
Somatic Experiencing was developed by observing how animals behave in the wild. Dr. Peter Levine noticed that although animals were often in life- threatening situations, they rarely showed signs of trauma. He noticed that after the threat was over, they naturally began to shake, discharging the tension built up while in danger.
In Somatic Experiencing we track the sensations in the body. This allows us to complete our instinctive animal response to threat and regain a calm and flexible nervous system. Releasing tension and increasing relaxation creates more fluidity in our bodies.

With this approach, many physical and emotional symptoms of stress can lessen or disappear. These include anxiety, fear, panic, restricted movement and physical pain. Some of the types of trauma with which Somatic Experiencing has been effective include
- Auto accidents
- Falls and other accidents
- Natural disasters
- Physical and sexual assault
- Other events resulting in feeling helpless or trapped
